Pork Apple Pie

This was a combination I never would have dreamed up on my own, but when our daughter-in-law described it, the dish sounded quite intriguing and we decided to give it a try. It was quite delicious! When we do it again, I'd use a different crust recipe, but the filling worked well as is.

Pork Apple Pie

  • 3 cups sliced apples - one Granny Smith, one Cosmic, one Honey Crisp
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons fine dry breadcrumbs
  • Pastry for two-crust pie with 2 teaspoons sage and 3/4 cup cheddar cheese added to the dough
Place the apples in a dry skillet and cook for about five minutes until softened. Remove and set aside.

In same skillet, heat a bit of oil and cook the onions for a couple of minutes. Add the ground pork and cook through. Stir in the remaining ingredients (except the crust).

Roll out the bottom crust and place in a pie dish. Spoon the meat mixture into the pan and top with the apples. Roll out the top crust and place on the apples.

Flute the crust, cut a couple of slits, then bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce oven to 375 degrees and bake an additional 35 minutes. Cool for 20-30 minutes before serving.
